Avocado parathas?! Wow! I mean this kid is really too much. I give him apple juice, he says "No". I ask him if he wants to have tutti fruti ice-cream - No. I think he just doesn't like food. No, just like his mother he is picky. That's all. Totally random.
We went to the Indian store the other day and B ordered Sev Puri. KB immediately asked for a cup of the same stuff - minus the puri. So he wanted the Sev - which he calls "Maggi" on taking a quick look. I feel excited if he just wants to try any new food. I can't explain why this fills me with excitement but it does. For a lot of parents, they are used to their child wanting to eat a lot of different things even if they are not good eaters. But for me, if KB even agrees to try something new, I feel happy - since he doesn't do so easily.
I saw this recipe for avocado chapathis. I give both KB and KG avocado every now and then as part of their meals. Mashed in the blender for KG and just sauteed for KB.
I decided to make avocado parathas today since I had a little bit of time since KB was in a good mood and looked like he would give me time to experiment with stuff.
These parathas turned out so yummy - I thought I should post about it so the few people who read my post can try it out. Especially since avocados are so good for health - it would be nice if some kids end up liking this stuff.
I took about 3/4 of an avocado (chopped) and added a pinch of turmeric, coriander leaves, two green chillies and put them all into the blender container. Just as I was about to blend it, on a whim, I just added a 1/4 teaspoon amount of MTR kothamalli thokku (coriander thokku). It gave it a bit of spicy twist. You can skip adding the thokku of course.
I blended this to paste and added enough chapathi flour (I used Laxmi brand) to knead it into a soft dough. No extra water added to the flour.
It gave me about 7 medium sized parathas. It is so easy to make parathas this way - once you blend it all as part of the flour - esp with avocados, it just yields to the motions of the roller so smoothly. No cracks, nothing.
By the way, two people (Neera in her comment) wrote to me that they tried out my MIL's pulav recipe and that it turned out to be awesome - I wish I could call my MIL now and tell her that. It is during these moments that you miss the person. But she lives on in the memories she has created for us and now in all the yummy pulav that a few people have had.
Oh back to the original story - so I made these avocado parathas and B just loved them. He could not guess at all what he was having until I told him. Note, this is "B" who loved them, not "KB" - if KB had "loved" the parathas, I would have been in heaven and still floating there! I cut half a paratha into different shapes (since KB had macroni with butter for a snack late evening - he did not want dinner) and lured KB to the table. I could not believe that he didn't actually run away looking at the green stuff in front of him. He actually had a few pieces. I think he stopped after a few pieces because he was not very hungry. But I still felt elated that he ate a few pieces of my new (borrowed recipe of course)creation. Am hoping to somehow get him to eat this good stuff more often! Hope some of you try this as well - good stuff for the kids especially!

That sounds really interesting - have never had avocado except raw and in a salad.
As for excitement i too feel the same. My daughter being a very picky eater. She loves to be in the company of dad or mom while eating and thus in school end up eating only 25-50% of the stuff. When she comes home she is all hungry and anything gets down her throat pretty soon. It is sucha delight feeding her. I am sure you are elated with KB eating or trying to attempt to tryi ng out stuff.
woo-hooo!! such a delight to hear it! and you may have finally cracked his code - way to go, Noon! :)
wow avocado parathas.. sounds so yum.. can I visit? I cant believe you offer tutti fruti Ice cream.. I could live on that!! :)
This sounds like such a cool recipe. I am sold.
I already make tofu chapathis. Crumble super silky tofu and add wheat flour to it to make the chapathi dough. So I will add avacados also. Protein + veggies, what more can I ask for?!!
BTW, I posted recipe for Spinach Kuzhipaniyaram. Sorry for taking so long.

BEV - I have only had Guacamole. I have not yet had Avocado salad. Should try it...
Sumana - seriously, it really is exciting when they like some new food. KB is so picky...he has not had any candy so far - even if I ask him if he wants it, he says no. I don't want to force him to try sugary stuff but sometimes I feel bad that this child has no desire for candy like other kids his age. (I would rather this than having to battle him if he liked it too much). He loves salty Indian snacks though...but even that he will have a small amount and that's it - done.
Kodi's mom - Oh I wish I had cracked his code. I am all excited over his agreeing to try a few pieces of this paratha! If I had cracked his code really I would be too thrilled! But he does like Avocado in his "mum mum" so am not too surprised he did not reject this. If I had made it w/out any spice he may have had more I think...
Preethi - Yeah you have to visit to have both pulav and this!
Tutti fruti - I got the Reena's one after a long time - I loved it - I normally don't like ice cream much - but this one is delicious!
UTBT - thanks for the recipe. I commented there.
And this recipe is from Mahanandi - she has also posted a link to Avocado Parathas there - the only difference is that I blend all the stuff into paste and add it to the flour - I feel this makes the rolling so much easier...and faster. Stuffing the parathas is a pain for me otherwise...B doesn't like tofu much but may be if I put it as part of the dough he won't know. I have not yet tried tofu for KB - should try it...never know he has such peculiar taste that he may readily take to tofu!
Sounds good ... have never had avacardo in any indian dish so far ... but this recipe invites me to try it.
CA - you should try it - especially if you add some spice to it - it tastes like Methi paratha and it comes out soo soft because of the fat in the avocado...all good fat! I loved this - may be a first time excitement thing also - never know!
...slinks away, red-faced at her complete lack of cooking skills...
Hi Noon. I know what you mean by feeling happy when KB is even ready to try something new. Same here :)
Noonie..:) I can understand your excitement. avocado parathas sounds sooo cool I am going to try it out tonight.
Also forgot to tell you...I tried out yuour pulao too. That weekend as well as today and we are loving. My only additional touch to that was to add a few leaves of pudina in addition to coriander. Added a zingy flavour! Oh and I pressure cooked the rice and vegetables together in the gravy paste. Came out excellent!
Rohini :) You more than make up for it by having a ton of other skills! :) Have heard so much about how well maintained your house is from the other bloggers...
CofS - yeah isn't it...it's amazing that we can get so excited about something like that...
Tharini - thanks! Glad you liked it. My MIL used to pressure cook them together - but no matter how I did it - varying water/no of whistles, I never could get "udhiri" pulav if I put them all together. So I started doing them separately. Yeah Pudhina adds a great touch...I didn't have any on hand so kind of didn't even think about it..Very happy that you all enjoyed it.
hi noon, i keep reading ur blogs now and then but never commented...my son too is a picky eater..will try out this recipie..thanks a lot
deepali
Yay! I feel like trying the avocado chapatis now!!
Wow -that sounds fabulous - and actually like something I might be able to make without totally screwing it up! Must try sometime....
Moppet is currently in a phase where she will eat ONLY steamed white rice - with absolutely nothing - no dal, no curry, no sambar, no curds, not even ghee or butter. What's with these kids? Really?

Hmmm..Sounds yummy and interseting...Will try and let you know..
AM
Sounds yum. I have tried tofu roti's[credit utbt], took me couple of times to get the dough consistency right. It tastes yum, its healthy and turns out to be very soft. Am gonna try this one too. Blending.. hmm.. never occurred. Regular blender or food processor?
Sounds like you found the perfect treat! :)
Hey I'm actually commenting on a cooking post, I can't believe it! But I got carried away with your excitement, shall recommend this to ..whom else but my mom :) Am sure she will be maha thrilled!
That's a new one..avocado in Indian cooking is not often featured. Will try it out soon....Thanks!
And reading your posts though I am not often commenting as the internet connection is terrible and I prefer to read as many friends' posts as I can rather than comment. Enjoyed KG's own post as well! :)
Deepali - thanks - you know KB ate it the first time, said no the second time. Have to keep trying I guess! :(
Schmetterling - So did you try it? I found that unless I add spices to it - like that coriander thokku - or green chillies - I find the avocado too bland and tasteless...
MM - KB has not gone through that phase - but I hear of that from so many parents - white rice only phase...may be they just enjoy the starchy taste...
Hope Moppet and Buffet (he will become a finance genius after he is fed all that brain fat!) like the avocado parathas! :)
Trishna - am so behind on tags. Will check it out...
Aryan - hope it turns out good and more importantly hope Aryan likes it!
DDMom - I use the Sumeet little belnder - any blender should be fine - as long as it is a paste finally - it makes it sooo easy to mix with the flour and roll out the parathas without worrying about the stuffing popping out or creating cracks...
K3 - well B and my sister (who visited) loved it...wish KB loved it as much! :)
Poppins - yes, definitely worth trying!
MB - nice to see you here...hope you are doing well..thanks for reading my posts!
