I knew it!

I picked up a loud speaker and announced to the entire world as to how KB has started eating better and how this is the first break through in his eating in the two years I have given him solid food. I am normally one to be afraid to even acknowledge such things to myself let alone say it so loudly! Well, I do say things loudly even if I am bit nervous about jinxing things myself. Nothing like a mother's own "nazar" for her child, as they say! Most often, when I feel excited, something goes wrong and brings me down to earth.

KB turned 2.5 years old on Feb.3.08 and I was quite excited about this half year birthday even more than I was when he turned two. May be because I was still reeling in the excitement of how really grown up he seemed in just the last one month...he is (was) eating better...he is able to express emotions at a different level than just crying...he talks and communicates a lot more than when he turned two...I am (finally) thinking about potty training him soon (OK you moms in India who potty train your kids when they are crawling - skip this line and move on!)...I am beginning to look for preschools for him...he is able to read letters and is able to relate to stories well and tell them back to us later...so many changes in him now more than when he turned two. Not that I consciously thought about it - but somehow I was quite excited about it. I didn't plan any party - I was thinking about trying the eggless cake (recipe from dotmom) if I had time or just buy a cake and have my close friend and her son (who is KB's friend) come over after dinner and just have a good time for an hour or so. That was my plan on Friday evening.

I wrote a 2.5yr update for KB - well, baby girl wrote it - I posted it on Friday night. Saturday evening, we took KB to the play area in the mall. It had rained on Saturday and after we got back home KB had a full blown cold. He threw up the moment I gave him a spoonful of food. He then asked me to give him Mac n Cheese - I gave it to him - he had a few spoons of the macroni and didn't want anymore. Pretty much he ate nothing for dinner. He went to bed hungry, nose stuffed up and kept tossing and turning - I was afraid he would throw up, so I made him sleep next to us and made sure he had a blanket over him and I kept his head raised. I had very little sleep on Sat night. Yesterday, he thankfully ate OK for lunch. But same story for dinner.
He threw up the moment I gave him any food. Tried a bunch of things and gave up. He skipped breakfast this morning. He only wanted to drink Gatorade - I just gave him what he asked for - as long as he got some fluids in I was happy. In essence, I jinxed the whole thing! I was not in a celebratory mood on Sat night what with KB looking tired with hunger and not being able to breathe comfortably...I just deleted my long post about his 2.5 yr update! It had links to some his favorite books, toys and what not. Sorry baby girl - you wrote about your brother - I took the liberty to delete that post!

He insisted he will only eat bagel today - Murphy's law - we ran out of bagels at home! I wanted him to get some solid food in - so took both kids to the bagel shop and he ate half a bagel - just the bread part, no crust below. Thankfully baby girl had a good time too looking around. But I had to stop at half a bagel and bring them home because she was sleepy. Once we got home, KB didn't want to eat any more bagel.

It's just a cold, nothing big I know - but he hasn't had a real cold/throwing up etc since last Feb - so I was nervous how I will handle it if he were to be cranky all day and I had to attend to baby girl also. So far they are being good..hopefully he will resume normal eating soon. Dotmom, I should have used your nimbu anti jinx graphic when I even mentally thought to myself that he is eating better and that somehow we managed to escape the "cold" for one year!

Noonie, don't get so worked up about the cold, it will get OK. It will be fine. I know how it feels, but the cold IS the Antijinx.

Once KB's back to normal (give him atleast 10 days) he will start to eat in his new and improved way.

HUGS !

Noonie - Relax. Ashu and KB are very much alike in the eating matter. You will see a marked improvement in a couple of months and also once he starts school. I know how frustrating it can be. Keep your cool.

Hi Noon - catching up after a few days away..Hope KB gets well soon. And that the birthday post is not lost forever - it sounded really nice, do re-post if you can.
This too shall pass, and all that..don't beat yourself up TOO much.

RJ - thanks - he is OK - just congested. Am thankful as long as he asks for Gatorade willingly and drinks it! :)

Aryan - Yeah - I don't do it normally. Only if my mom is around...
I probably should. How is little Aryan doing now?

Poppins - Thanks!
Do I sound worked up? I am not as frazzled as it seems from this post! :) But yeah on Sat night, I was bugged because he could not breathe, he did not eat, had to clean up the throw up mess at dinner - so overall I was upset that his b'day turned out to be worse than a normal day! Yeah I am now accepting of the fact that he will only start eating well after he is totally through with this cold. Every one has a cold seems like - all of America! :))

Hey Boo - like I said, eating was beginning to get better and I celebrated a little too soon! :)

Mala - thanks...good to see you here after a long time. So have you started posting? Please do!
And glad you read (saw?) that post! Was so sad myself when I deleted it!
I have saved it in my folders but now feel like the moment has passed!

Taamommy - you know, even last time I tried to click on your name but it says profile not accessible. Don't know why!

Oh boy!! We are in the same boat if thats any relief. Its been 4 weeks since all of us at home were healthy. And I know looking at your little one cough/be uneasy with a cold is heart wrenching :( Well hang in there. This too shall pass. Hope you have the vaporiser/humidifier on at all times to ease breathing. Turning the bathroom into a steam room by turning the shower on at maximum heat helps too.

The appetite will take some time to get better. Don't worry! Clear fluids, as you said, are important right now.

Hey Noonie.. kept thinking about your predicament.. does he like veges and fruits.. you can try replacing a meal with salad and eggs.. I did that for Nantu for a while.. or maybe roti jelly roll.. Nantu still prefers stuff like that to the traditional rice.. today his lunch was cheesy veges !!

Dotmom - yeah - I feel glad when he has half a bagel...he likes bagels just like me! I used to thrive on bagels at one point!

Preethi - yes, I can't wait for the day when he will be settled in a school - no tears and also starts to eat well...eating on his own - God - I cannot even imagine that happening for another 10 years! And reg other foods - Mr.Picky gets even pickier when he is sick. I don't give cheese too much when he has a cold - I feel it makes it worse for him... He normally like boiled egg whites - but yesdy he had a few pieces of it and didn't want more...so goes the story. Luckily he ate some soup I made at home - with garlic and jeera and all that good ol cold medicine stuff!

Neera - yeah. After I read your post for the first time, I think of you often wondering how you do it - like this morn, it was a bit chilly but not much - so despite their having a cold, I could take them both out in the sun - which really helps their mood also...it must be twice as hard to raise two young kids in a very very cold place like MN - of course you get used to everything and adapt...

Preethi - btw - what is roti jelly roll 0 jam with roti? You make rotis at home? KB doesn't eat sweet stuff much...can try plain roti though and see if he likes that when he has a cold...

hey noonie, take it easy. First of, KB got a cold after one year. That in itself is an achievement for both you and KB. I would be happy if D can go 2 months without one.

And when they have a cold, they just feel heavy headed with tasteless taste buds just like us adults. Give him some time, am sure he will start eating well again.
I read the 2.5 year post from my google reader and loved the way he is showing his emotions, he is sure growing up to be more responsible :) :)
