No more periods?

You may have heard about this new pill. Essentially if a woman takes this pill she can stop her period entirely...
I personally would not feel comfortable taking this pill much as I hate going through "that time of the month" and all the joys that come with it. But it could just be mental conditioning. May be the next generation of girls will find this a perfectly normal thing to do and a matter of their choice. A young girl may just say "hey - I am busy preparing for SAT's, applying for college - I don't want to deal with periods now!" and casually go about doing what she needs to do. I guess parents of the next generation will have a host of new issues such as this to contend with based on their own personal preferences. They may not be used to this idea but if the young teen wants it and if it is widely used (remains to be seen if this pill can really succeed) then it may not be easy to refuse. I do wonder how many women will feel comfortable with the idea of not having a period for a whole decade. No matter what scientific explanations say about the period, it is something that is considered so much a part of womanhood. I had gone to a wedding a few years back and I met some woman who told me she just takes the pill all the time so as to not get her period - at that time I found it so strange. Now with an FDA approved pill like this I wonder if more and more women will choose to avoid all the discomfort associated with the period. Curious to know if you would take this pill to avoid periods for a long time...

Hey, that's an interesting article, Noon. In my mind, it's a natural process, and since I don't know what the long term consequences of supressing it would be, it's not a risk I think is worth taking.

But then, my periods aren't particularly painful - I barely notice them after the first day - maybe someone who suffers real discomfort would feel differently.

Yes, I agree with you - if periods were particularly painful like it is for some women am sure this will be quite welcome. I am with you on long term effects - though it is FDA approved...

I came to your blog through Poppins blog page.
As MM said, periods are a natural process, anything that is done to obstruct it will have other effects.I have never had big problems during my periods, but even if I did,I would never think of taking drugs to stop it.It is way too drastic for me.

Most of these FDA decisions are taken on very short term trial data and are not fully cognisant of long term effects.

I might use this as a stop gap (if I had to go for a trek say) but not long term I think.

i HATE having a period. it is so uncomfortable. fine it was part of life, i dealt with it.

if i had a truly 'safe' choice, i'd love never to have a period again.

i may not take this pill though, and i may be just doomed to having a period till i die (oh thank god i just remembered menopause!) so till menopause coz i don't think these things are entirely safe. they come with many side effects and that is a price i am not willing to pay.

There are pills already available, as you mentioned, that can be used to postpone periods by a few days. They are progesterone pills (e.g. Regesterone(R))and I know a lot of Indian women take them temporarily to be "in" at weddings, parties, festivals, travel etc. They are also used as "morning after" pills. That said, I suppose any long-term "unnatural" hormonal imbalance would be detrimental to a woman's physical and mental health. I really hope it does not catch on, especially since I have a three year old DAUGHTER, that I would rather see live a "natural" menstrual life as an adult.

Hi MDM,Lakshmi,d, anon,

Yes, I too feel one really doesn't know the long term effects. There are such pills already and people use it - only thing is this pill can be taken continuously leaving no room for the period to happen...it may well become common some 10 yrs later - but as of now - remains to be seen if it will succeed. Apparently the tampon industry is not happy with this pill! ;)

interesting. i have always thot to myself during my period 'somebody out there hates women and i have real issues with that person!'
but to actually have this choice...hmmm. i wouldn't take it up. i have been brought up with this sort of belief that we are given only as much pain as we can handle. childbirth, etc., are examples of that. and i hate taking medicines and messing with my body. so i really don't think that pill finds a taker in me.

Hey noon ...periods are part of womanhood and I think I'd be bothered if I didn't get it regularly.

This is an interesting post.
Have popped in pills very rarely for an unavoidable puja/wedding etc, but only in extreme cases.

Not have periods for a decade... dream dream..!! But not with pills. Am sure there must be consequences.

The one thing I enjoyed the most inmy pregnancy was the absence of periods!! :-)

An important tip to consider when with regards to acne breakouts are to consider signing up for an internet based online community. This is important since you will not only have got a support group to assist you, but you may also get on other tips or techniques that might give you a hand. This really is beneficial if you fail to afford skilled guidance. Inas665much
